999,971: Frightened Rabbit — Keep Yourself Warm

Like those R rated movies with a teenage mentality, this song is a tale of drug-addled hookups and mutually assured vd written in the snickering style of a highschool burnout. But the delivery makes you wonder. It opens with the solemnity of a hymn and ends with the anthemic uplift of a U2 song. It's too deadly serious to leave you thinking the band is just playing it straight. Eventually you realize that yes they ARE joking and no, they don't think it's funny. It's like when you're sitting in a bar and some old drunk makes an amusing remark and you laugh, not so much because it's funny but because that's what you do when someone tells a joke. Then the drunk just stares at you. You squirm in your seat, unsure what to do next, but suddenly the guitars kick in and drunk launches into a cathartic anthem of redemption that makes you realize that grandeur can be found in the smallest dirtiest corners of the human psyche. Well the metaphor kind of fell apart at the end there but you see what I mean.
