999,966: Gary Puckett & the Union Gap — Young Girl

It’s often said that there are only two sure things in life: death and taxes. Add a third: Gary Puckett drives a shag-carpeted rape-van through your town and hangs out by himself at Skate World, convinced that he’s fighting the jailbait off with a stick. These young girls are all over Gary Puckett? Only if they’re helping him find his “lost puppy,” that’s for sure.

Not many people can get away with writing a melodramatic, 100% serious, insanely popular ode to statutory rape. I act shocked, but people dream about Sting singing “Every Breath You Take” at their wedding, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Believe me, Gary Glitter and Roman Polanski are listening to this somewhere, wondering how they fucked up so badly. Puckett didn’t run, he didn’t hide and didn’t lie. No, sir. Gary Puckett (and his writers/producers) made it catchy and affecting and took it straight to the top of the charts.
